One of the more popularly emerging business models is pharmacy delivery to assisted living and skilled nursing environments. Generally assisted living or group homes arrange for their resident medications to be delivered by a pharmacy who may specialize in that resident population.
The pharmacy also tends to print medication documentation or administration sheets which staff uses to note when a medication is administered. Today, pharmacies are going a step further. What is that?
Many are paying for the Medication Administration training for direct care staff, often a licensing and mental health apparatus requirement in every state. These training classes cover everything from:
- Medication definition
- Medication storage
- Medication disposal
- Medication side affects
- Medication abbreviations
- Medication routes
- Proper means of administering certain types of meds
- Managing insulin requirements on a sliding scale and much more
Due to the obvious connection between the delivery of drugs and filling prescriptions, assisting a home to be regulatory compliant in areas of staff development has advantages. Additionally, it eliminates at least one operational expense for the home. From a marketing perspective, maybe pharmacies should be listening.
Penny for your thoughts.
