Adult day care saves lives and saves family caregivers from a life of unending stress!! Many of these programs cater rather successfully to the medically fragile elderly (www.foxchaseadc.com, www.centralgeorgiaadultday.com) and do a truly bang-up job.
However, we need more that are staffed by people with experience in mental health (including psych nurses) and who have a keen understanding of medication affects on certain behaviors. Professional personnel should also have intimate knowledge of interventional actions associated with the gentle teaching principles of managing an environment for the mentally ill. Those with developmental limitations must also be considered.
Some manage to serve multiple populations in the same program. Unfortunately, the behavioral compatibility is often not present. In addition it can be next to impossible to assure cross-training of front-line staff which makes them qualified to serve multiple populations with highly varying diagnosis.
Are you among those care driven entrepreneurs who is considering the development of an adult day program? Well there is much technical help available and hopefully you will consider what may be the non-traditional populations.
What is important is that we serve all of society in community based care. With public dollars available to assist there is no reason why more effort is not being invested into this area. Ask us how.
